BCAA 2:1:1 is a supplement based on branched-chain amino acids in a 2:1:1 ratio combined with vitamin B6, which contributes to normal energy, protein and glycogen metabolism and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Branched-chain amino acids (Leucine, Valine, Isoleucine) are useful for supplementing an athlete's diet as the body is unable to synthesise them on its own.
BCAA 2:1:1 are the three branched-chain amino acids (leucine, valine and isoleucine) that make up 35% of the amino acids in skeletal muscle. Unlike the other amino acids, BCAAs bypass liver metabolism and act directly on the muscle.
Leucine is the amino acid that initiates protein synthesis, which is why its presence is essential for increasing muscle mass. Valine and isoleucine are the other two branched-chain amino acids that reach the muscle directly without passing through the liver. These two support both leucine in protein synthesis and the reduction of fatigue sensation when taken pre- and intra-workout.
In addition, 2:1:1 BCAAs when taken before or during activity also play an anti-catabolic role, i.e. they prevent the loss of muscle mass, which is very useful in the case of periods of calorie deficit, definition, or for long-duration sports where there is a very high energy expenditure.
